Don’t know what to say when you pray? Begin by addressing God as your Father; this short lesson gives you words to start and one step to practice today.
ABC prayer guide · Part 1 of 3
Begin with the One you are speaking to
You do not need an impressive opening. A simple “Father” can help turn your attention from how well you are speaking to the God you are approaching.
Jesus’ model prayer begins with reverence and relationship. Before listing requests, pause to acknowledge who God is.
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”
Matthew 6:9, KJV
Try a simple opening
Choose one way to begin: “Father, I need Your help,” “Lord, thank You for this day,” or “God, I am here, even though I don’t know what to say.” These are prayer examples, not Bible quotations.
If the word “father” brings painful memories, you do not have to hide that from God. Take your time as you learn about His character through Jesus.
Pray this now
Father, I come to You as I am. Help me stop worrying about finding impressive words and begin speaking honestly with You.
Thank You for inviting me to pray. Teach me to honor Your name and make room for You in my daily life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Carry it into your day
Choose a familiar moment, such as after waking or before a meal, to repeat your simple opening. Our guide to making prayer a daily habit can help you find a rhythm.
