62 Bible Verses About Prayer (KJV) With Practical Guidance

You do not need impressive words to begin praying. Scripture gives us language for gratitude, fear, confession, unanswered questions, and the needs of others. These Bible verses about prayer help you move from wondering what to say to speaking honestly with God. The passages are arranged for reading and reflection, with guidance for putting them into practice when your faith feels strong and when all you can manage is a simple request for help.

What the Bible teaches about prayer

Prayer is a relationship with God expressed through worship, confession, thanksgiving, requests, and intercession. Jesus’ model in Matthew 6:9–13 begins with the Father’s name and kingdom before turning to daily needs. Prayer therefore includes both bringing our concerns and learning to desire God’s will.

Read promises about answered prayer alongside 1 John 5:14 and Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane. Confidence in God is not a method for controlling him. Waiting, sorrow, and an answer different from the one we hoped for can exist within a faithful prayer life.

Scripture quotations below are from the King James Version (KJV); some are excerpts. Each numbered entry is one passage and may include more than one verse. Reflections and prayers are devotional commentary.

Bringing your requests to God

Prayer involves trust and honesty. Jeremiah 29 addresses people in exile, and 2 Chronicles 7:14 belongs to God’s response to Solomon concerning Israel and the temple. These settings enrich our understanding without making either passage a formula for national or personal success.

Learning from Jesus and seeking wisdom

Jesus made room for prayer and taught his disciples to do the same. Begin with the priorities of the Lord’s Prayer, then ask for wisdom about the decision in front of you. Guidance should be weighed alongside Scripture, wise counsel, and responsible action.

16. Matthew 6:9-13

“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Intercession, perseverance, and God’s will

28. Matthew 26:39

“And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

Strength, gratitude, and courage

Prayer does not require the absence of tears. Hebrews 5:7 describes Jesus praying with deep emotion, and Acts 4 shows believers asking for courage amid threats. Philippians 4:13 concerns strength for contentment in differing circumstances, not unlimited personal achievement.

30. Philippians 4:13

42. 1 Peter 5:6

43. Hebrews 11:6

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

45. Acts 4:29

“And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word.”

Healing, confession, and forgiveness

51. Matthew 6:14

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

Praying for your community and daily needs

Prayer reaches beyond personal concerns to leaders, neighbors, and the wellbeing of our communities. Choose one local need to pray about and one practical way to help. Continue with thanksgiving even when your circumstances remain unfinished.

52. 1 Timothy 2:1-2

A simple way to use a Bible verse in prayer

Read one passage in its surrounding chapter. Notice what it reveals about God and what response it invites. Then turn that meaning into a personal request. For James 1:5, you might pray, “Father, give me wisdom for this decision and help me accept good counsel.” Finish by naming one step of obedience you can take.

What should I pray when I have no words?

Begin with a short, honest sentence: “God, I need your help.” Romans 8:26 offers reassurance that our weakness is not a barrier to God’s care. A written prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, or a quiet moment with a Psalm can help you begin.

A prayer to make these Scriptures personal

Father, teach me to pray honestly and listen carefully. Help me bring my needs to you, remember those who are suffering, confess what needs to change, and give thanks for your mercy. Shape my desires through your word and give me courage to follow your will. In Jesus’ name, amen.
