Have you ever wanted to pray, but felt so worried, tired, or overwhelmed that you couldn’t find the words?
Learning how to pray when you don’t know what to say begins with bringing those feelings honestly before God.
You can begin with one honest sentence: “God, I don’t know what to say, but I need Your help.” You don’t have to explain everything perfectly. Tell Him what is troubling you, ask for help with the next step, and let Scripture guide your prayer.
Through my years of Christian ministry, I’ve noticed that wanting to pray and knowing what to say don’t always come together. Sometimes we need help putting our concerns into words.
That’s why I’ve compiled these prayers to help you get started on your prayer journey. Each one includes Scripture, a simple explanation, and a practical step to help you move forward.
These short prayers are here to help you start praying about your situation right now. If you desire to go further, I have created articles on this website to help you develop your prayer life.
All Scripture quotations are from the King James Version. The sample prayers are original prayers, not Bible quotations.
If you don’t find a prayer for the situation you’re facing, please send us a prayer request. Tell us what you would like prayer for, sharing only what you feel comfortable sharing, and we’ll create a prayer to help you bring that concern before God.

A short prayer when you cannot find the words.
Father, I do not know how to put this into words. You know what I am carrying. Help me bring it honestly before you. Give me wisdom for the next step, strength for today, and willingness to receive help. Teach me to trust you while I wait. In Jesus’ name, amen.
You can stop there, or add the name of a person or situation on your heart. This prayer is a starting point you can adapt.
Does God understand when we struggle to pray?
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” — Romans 8:26, KJV
Paul places this encouragement within a passage about suffering, hope, and waiting. He acknowledges weakness in prayer rather than pretending believers always know what to ask. Our uncertainty does not put us beyond the Holy Spirit’s help.
This verse does not promise that every desired outcome will happen. It reassures us that God’s help reaches us in our weakness. We can come honestly, even when we cannot identify all our needs.
How to pray when you don’t know what to say: five simple steps.
1. Begin with the truth about how you feel.
“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” — Psalm 62:8, KJV
This invitation connects trust with pouring out our hearts. We do not have to hide fear, disappointment, or confusion before approaching God.
Try completing one sentence: “Lord, the hardest thing for me today is…” You may write it down or say it quietly. Be specific enough to be honest, without pressuring yourself to explain everything.
Try this: “Lord, I am frightened about tomorrow’s conversation. Help me speak truthfully and listen patiently.”
2. Remember that you are speaking to a Father who knows.
“Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.” — Matthew 6:8, KJV
Jesus speaks these words while teaching about prayer and warning against empty repetition. God’s knowledge of our needs frees us from treating prayer as a performance. We do not need impressive language to make Him aware of our situation.
His knowledge also does not make prayer unnecessary: Jesus goes on to teach His disciples how to pray. We bring our needs as an expression of dependence and relationship.
Try this: “Father, you already know the situation. Help me trust you enough to speak honestly about it.”
3. Let one Bible verse give you a starting point.
Read Psalm 62:8 slowly. Notice its invitation to trust and pour out your heart. Then respond in your own words: “God, help me trust you with this concern. I need the refuge you offer.”
Keep the verse’s meaning in view. Scripture is not a formula that guarantees the outcome we prefer. Read the surrounding passage when possible, and ask what it teaches about God and how we should respond.
Try this: Choose one phrase from the verse, explain what it means in ordinary language, and turn that thought into a personal request.
4. Ask for one thing you need today.
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16, KJV
The preceding verses point to Jesus as our great high priest, who understands our weakness. Our confidence in approaching God rests on Him. We come seeking mercy and grace, not claiming control over what happens next.
When the whole situation feels too large, ask for help with one faithful action. You might need to make a difficult call, apologize, rest, seek counsel, or complete an urgent task.
Try this: “Lord, give me courage to ask someone for help today.”
5. Allow a pause, and invite someone to pray with you.
You do not need to fill every moment with speech. Pause after a sentence. If you become distracted, gently return to the concern or Scripture before you.
Do not feel obliged to hear a message during the pause. Quiet reflection is not a guarantee of immediate direction. Consider any impressions carefully in light of Scripture and wise counsel.
If praying alone remains difficult, ask a trusted Christian friend or pastor, “Would you pray with me? I cannot find the words today.” Receiving support is a practical way to keep turning toward God.
Prayers for the situation you are facing.
How to pray when you feel overwhelmed.
Perhaps several people need something from you, and you cannot see where to begin.
“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” — Psalm 62:8, KJV
What this means for you: This psalm invites us to pour out our hearts while trusting God. You can tell Him what feels too heavy before you have a solution. Begin by naming one burden rather than trying to organize every concern.
Lord, everything feels urgent, and I cannot see where to begin. Help me recognize what needs my attention today and what can wait. Give me wisdom to accept my limits and courage to ask for support. Lead me in the next faithful step. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Write down one responsibility you can address today and one concern you need to share with someone.
How to pray when you are grieving.
An empty chair or an ordinary reminder may bring the loss close again. You do not have to rush past that sorrow.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18, KJV
What this means for you: The psalm speaks of God’s nearness to the brokenhearted. It does not set a timetable for feeling better. Let this assurance help you bring your grief honestly and receive companionship while you mourn.
God of mercy, I miss someone I love, and words feel small beside this loss. Receive my sorrow. Help me through the ordinary moments that now feel unfamiliar. Bring patient people alongside me, and help me receive their care without feeling that I must hide my tears. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Tell a trusted person one specific way they could support you this week.
How to pray when you feel distant from God.
You may remember a time when prayer felt easier and wonder how to begin again.
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16, KJV
What this means for you: Hebrews directs us to approach God through Jesus, our high priest. The invitation is to seek mercy and help in need. You can return today without first producing a particular feeling.
Father, I do not feel close to You right now, but I want to turn toward You. Show me where I need to confess, change direction, or seek help. Keep me from judging Your faithfulness only by today’s feelings. Help me return to Scripture and fellowship with other believers. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Read one short Bible passage slowly. Bring one question from it to a trusted pastor or mature Christian.
How to pray when you are tired of waiting.
Repeating the same request can leave you tired and unsure what else to say.
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16, KJV
What this means for you: This invitation to seek grace applies while the need remains. It does not specify when a circumstance will change. Ask for the help you need to live faithfully through this day of waiting.
Lord, I have brought this request before You many times. Waiting has worn me down. Help me remain honest without giving up on prayer. Give me discernment about what I can do, patience with what I cannot control, and strength to obey You today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Separate the action you can take from the outcome you cannot control.
How to pray for financial help.
When a bill is due and the money is missing, even opening the envelope can feel difficult.
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19, KJV
What this means for you: Paul speaks to believers who had supported his ministry, within a chapter that also discusses contentment in need. This assurance of God’s provision is not a promise of wealth or a payout on demand. Bring the specific need and ask for wisdom to receive and use practical help.
Bring the specific pressure before God: rent, groceries, debt, or an unexpected bill. Ask for provision and wisdom without treating prayer as a promise of wealth.
Father, You know what I need and what I cannot afford. Please provide for my household and guide my decisions. Help me face the numbers honestly, avoid desperate choices, and recognize trustworthy help. Give me courage to seek assistance and patience as I work toward stability. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Write down the most urgent need and one person or organization you can contact for practical help.
How to pray for healing.
You may be waiting for results, coping with pain, or wondering how to pray beside someone’s hospital bed.
“Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.” — Jeremiah 17:14, KJV
What this means for you: Jeremiah turns to the LORD for healing and salvation amid opposition. His prayer models direct dependence on God. We can ask sincerely for healing without using the verse to predict a recovery or replace medical care.
You can ask directly for healing while also praying for comfort, good care, and strength through uncertainty.
Lord, I bring this illness before You and ask for healing. Please ease the pain, strengthen my body, and give wisdom to those caring for me. Help me explain my needs clearly and receive the care available to me. Sustain me through treatment and waiting. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Name the person and their need in your prayer. Continue appropriate medical care.
How to pray for your family.
When people you love are struggling or disagreeing, you may not know how to help without making things worse.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5, KJV
What this means for you: James encourages believers facing trials to ask God for wisdom. Apply that invitation to your own part in family life: listening, speaking honestly, and discerning when to seek help. Prayer does not give us control over another person’s choices.
Pray for people by name and identify a real need rather than trying to solve every family difficulty at once.
Father, I bring my family before You. Give us patience where we misunderstand one another and honesty where we have avoided difficult conversations. Provide for those who are struggling. Help me listen, apologize when needed, and show love through useful actions. Draw us toward You and toward peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Reach out to one family member and ask how you can support them.
How to pray for your children.
A child’s choices, friendships, or struggles can stay on your mind long after a conversation ends.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5, KJV
What this means for you: God’s invitation to ask for wisdom gives parents a place to begin. Ask how to guide this particular child with patience and discernment. Then make room to hear what they are experiencing rather than assuming you already know.
Ask for wisdom, protection, and trustworthy relationships while remembering that love includes listening.
Lord, watch over my children in the places I cannot be. Give them discernment about friendships and courage to ask for help. Surround them with people who care for them well. Help me guide them patiently, hear their concerns, and model the faith I hope they will embrace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

How to pray for your marriage.
You may want closeness but feel worn down by the same disagreement.
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16, KJV
What this means for you: Hebrews invites us to seek mercy and timely help through Christ. In marriage, that can begin with admitting our own need for grace and asking for courage to act wisely. It does not require overlooking harm or carrying another person’s responsibility.
Name the concern honestly and ask for wise action, mutual respect, and help where it is needed.
God of grace, help us face the difficulties in our marriage truthfully. Teach us to listen without preparing an attack and to take responsibility for our own choices. Give us humility to seek wise counsel and courage to change harmful patterns. Lead us toward kindness, integrity, and safety. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Choose one respectful conversation or seek qualified support. If there is abuse, prioritize safety; prayer does not require remaining in danger.
How to pray when you need a job.
After unanswered applications or a job loss, the next application can feel harder to start.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5, KJV
What this means for you: James’s encouragement concerns wisdom through trials, not a guarantee of a particular job. Ask for discernment about opportunities, preparation, and people who can help. Let prayer support one practical action today.
Ask for opportunities and strength for the practical work of searching, applying, and preparing.
Father, the uncertainty of work is weighing on me. Please open suitable opportunities and help me prepare faithfully. Give me clarity about my abilities, honesty in my applications, and courage after rejection. Connect me with trustworthy people and provide for my needs while I search. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Complete one manageable task: update your résumé, submit an application, or contact someone about an opening.
How to pray for protection.
Fear can make it difficult to think clearly about what to do next.
“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” — Psalm 62:8, KJV
What this means for you: The psalm calls God our refuge and invites trust. Bring your fear to Him while taking responsible steps toward safety. Trust is compatible with seeking help and setting boundaries.
Bring your fear to God and ask for discernment as well as protection.
Lord, please protect me and those entrusted to my care. Help me recognize danger, act wisely, and seek help promptly. Guard my heart from being ruled by fear or revenge. Give me courage to set necessary boundaries and wisdom to choose a safe path. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Take any appropriate practical safety step rather than waiting for a feeling of certainty.
How to pray when you feel anxious.
Perhaps your thoughts keep returning to what might go wrong, even when you want to rest.
“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” — Psalm 62:8, KJV
What this means for you: Pouring out your heart means you do not need to hide anxious thoughts from God. This verse offers an invitation to trust, not a test of whether you can stop worrying instantly. Start with the concern you can name today.
You can name a fear without needing to resolve it before praying.
Father, my thoughts keep running ahead of me. Help me return to what is before me today. Give me peace to face this moment and wisdom to distinguish a real responsibility from an imagined outcome. Help me receive support and take one steady step. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Name the concern in one sentence. If anxiety persistently disrupts daily life, seek appropriate professional support alongside prayer.
How to pray for guidance in a decision.
When two choices both carry risks, you may feel afraid of making the wrong one.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5, KJV
What this means for you: James invites us to ask God for wisdom generously given. Wisdom involves faithful judgment, not necessarily a sudden sign. Bring your motives, gather the relevant facts, and seek sound counsel as you pray.
Ask for wisdom and integrity, and allow time to consider Scripture, facts, and sound counsel.
Lord, I need direction about this decision. Help me see my motives honestly and consider how my choices affect others. Give me patience to gather the facts and humility to receive counsel. Keep me from choosing only what is easiest. Lead me toward a wise and faithful next step. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Write down the decision, the information still missing, and someone qualified to advise you.
How to pray when you need forgiveness.
You may regret what you said or did and feel tempted either to excuse it or avoid God altogether.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9, KJV
What this means for you: John contrasts acknowledging sin with denying it. The promise points to God’s faithfulness in forgiveness and cleansing. Confess honestly, and let repentance shape what you do next; forgiveness does not erase every consequence.
Confession names the wrong and accepts responsibility rather than making excuses.
Merciful Father, I confess the wrong I have done. Forgive me and help me turn from it. Show me where I need to apologize, repair harm, and change my habits. Keep me from using grace as an excuse to repeat what hurts others. Teach me to walk honestly before You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Next step: Identify a concrete change or an appropriate way to make amends without demanding immediate reconciliation.
How to pray before sleep.
When the room becomes quiet, unfinished tasks and worries can feel louder.
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8, KJV
What this means for you: The psalm ends with trust in God after distress. It gives us words for entrusting the night to Him without promising immediate sleep every time. You can ask for rest and leave tomorrow’s responsibilities for their proper time.
Close the day by naming what remains unfinished and asking for rest.
Father, I bring You the work, worries, and disappointments of this day. Thank You for the help I received. Forgive my failures and guide what needs attention tomorrow. Help me release the need to solve everything tonight. Grant me rest and strength for the morning. In Jesus’ name, amen.

How to pray for success at school.
A difficult subject, approaching exam, or disappointing grade may leave you questioning your ability.
“For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.” — Proverbs 2:6, KJV
What this means for you: Proverbs 2 presents wisdom as something to seek attentively and receive from God. This verse supports prayer for understanding alongside diligent learning. It is not a guarantee of top grades; asking questions and practicing are meaningful next steps.
Bring your studies, exams, and classroom challenges before God. Ask for understanding, diligence, and integrity as you do the work of learning. Success includes growing in knowledge and character, not only receiving a particular grade.
Father, help me understand what I am learning and use my study time wisely. Give me courage to ask questions when I am confused and patience when progress is slow. Help me prepare for exams honestly, remember what I have studied, and treat my teachers and classmates with respect. When I make mistakes, help me learn from them and begin again. In Jesus’ name, amen.

- Day 1 — Begin honestly. Read Psalm 62:8. What are you finding hardest to admit? Complete: “God, today I feel…”
- Day 2 — Remember that God knows. Read Matthew 6:8. What are you trying to explain perfectly? Complete: “Father, you know my need for…”
- Day 3 — Ask for help in weakness. Read Romans 8:26. Where have you run out of words? Complete: “Help me pray about…”
- Day 4 — Come for mercy. Read Hebrews 4:16. Is shame keeping you away? Name what you need to confess and ask for mercy.
- Day 5 — Bring one person before God. Read Psalm 62:8. Name someone you love and one concern you have for them. Ask how you might offer practical care.
- Day 6 — Seek grace for today. Read Hebrews 4:16. Choose one difficult responsibility. Ask for help with the next step rather than trying to solve the whole future.
- Day 7 — Return without performing. Read Matthew 6:8. What helped you speak honestly this week? Thank God for that help and choose a simple time to pray again.
Frequently asked questions.
Can I pray silently?
Yes. You can direct your thoughts to God without speaking aloud. If your mind wanders, writing a sentence or reading a verse can help you focus. Neither method makes your prayer more impressive to God.
Is it wrong to use a written prayer?
A written prayer can help you begin. Read it thoughtfully and adapt it honestly. The concern in Jesus’ teaching is empty repetition and misplaced confidence in many words, not the mere use of words someone else has written.
What if I cry instead of speaking?
You do not need to force yourself to stop crying before turning toward God. Romans 8:26 offers reassurance about help in weakness. If possible, let a trusted person sit or pray with you.
Does struggling to pray mean I have no faith?
Difficulty finding words is not, by itself, proof that you lack faith. Tiredness, grief, distraction, and uncertainty can make prayer difficult. Begin honestly and seek support rather than measuring your faith by the length or eloquence of a prayer.
What if I feel no different afterward?
Prayer does not always produce an immediate change in emotion or circumstances. Take the next responsible step and stay connected to supportive people.
Keep returning to God. You do not need a particular feeling to prove that your prayer mattered.
Continue praying for someone you love.
