The Top 13 Benefits of Praying in Tongues

‘And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name, they will…speak with new tongues’. – Mark 16:17

God does not do a thing without a purpose, neither does He do a thing just so He can ‘show-off’ in order to impress. God is very detailed and meticulous.

His creation and His handiwork are enough evidence of His majesty, love, and power. ‘The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows forth His handiwork.’ – Psalm 19:1.

Just as He has reasons for sending His Son to the world, even so, He has reasons for sending and giving the Holy Spirit to us.

The ministry of the Holy Spirit has a lot of heaven’s blessings for the Church.

For example, the gift of tongues is meant for every believer, and exercising this precious gift has a lot of benefits that can not be exhausted.

While God does not expect us to exhaust His gift because He knows we can’t, He expects us to take advantage of it and get the best we can out of it.

What does praying in tongues do?

There are many things that praying in tongues can do in the life of the individual believer, and in the corporate life of a gathering of believers or the Church.

Here we are going to focus on the individual believer, and I am going to show you 13 top reasons for praying in tongues which could also be termed praying in the Spirit.

  1. Praying in Tongues Allows You to Speak Directly to God.

“For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.” –1 Corinthians 14:2

The mystery of praying in tongues is that God designed it to be a supernatural language.

It cannot be studied, learned, or written in any college or university because it is not a natural language.

Whenever you speak in tongues, you are speaking to God’s ears without interference.

The devil cannot understand you; neither can he interfere with or intercept your communication with your Father.

  1. Praying in Tongues Keeps You in Tune with the Holy Spirit.

“And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.” –Acts 2:4

Praying in tongues helps you in yielding to the Holy Spirit who dwells in you and not to the unprofitable inclinations of the flesh. You see, the Scriptures tell us that ‘the flesh lusts against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh and these are contrary to one another.’ – Galatians 5:17.

Many times the flesh yearns for something that is not profitable for you. The flesh and the spirit both have their own desires, and this presents a struggle within you.

Praying in tongues helps you to yield to that which is of God and overcome the desires of the flesh.

  1. Praying in Tongues Strengthens Your Spirit.

“A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.” –1 Corinthians 14:4

Praying in tongues benefits only those who practice it. It makes your spirit strong. The more you speak in tongues, the stronger your spirit gets!

There are many things in the world today that the enemy has devised to distract people from taking out time to pray in the spirit, the enemy knows that those who pray habitually in the spirit cannot be weak spiritually and therefore he cannot prey upon them.

Don’t discount this powerful gift from God. Desire it.

Embrace it and relish the strength it adds to your spiritual life. Do you need strength in your spirit so you can ably resist the devil’s temptations? Then start and continue to set time for praying in tongues daily.

  1. Praying in Tongues Is a Weapon Against the Work of the Enemy.

“And then he told them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved…

These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages… They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.’ –Mark 16:15-18

Jesus proclaimed several things that would happen to those who followed Him and continued His work.

Speaking in tongues is one of those gifts, and it allows Jesus’ followers to stand against the work of the enemy.

The power of God is released to destroy the webs of darkness every time you exercise this precious gift. It strengthens your spirit as you stand against the work of the devil.

  1. Praying in tongues builds you up spiritually and helps you to live a Spirit-led life.

‘But you, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.’ – Jude 1:20

If you really want to be a spiritual person (one who walks in and with the Holy Spirit), you need to cultivate the habit of speaking in tongues daily.

It will build your spirit and help you to easily follow the leading of the Spirit. The Spirit desires to lead many believers, that is an essential part of His ministry, but many are not able to get His leading because they fail to pray as they should.

‘For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.’ – Romans 8:14

  1. Praying in the spirit is a means of magnifying God.

And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit has been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.’ – Acts 10:45-46.

To magnify something means to make it greater and bigger, to increase its significance. Praying in the Spirit makes God bigger in your life! It makes the life of Christ within you increase greatly.

It increases the workings of God in your life, and also helps you realize the importance of God, thus giving Him His rightful place. When you know the importance of a thing, you don’t joke with it, do you?

  1. Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and His presence.

‘And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; buy you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.’ – John 14:16-17

This is the power of praying in tongues daily. It helps you to be more sensitive to God’s Spirit and His presence. It helps you recognize easily His gentle nudgings in your heart.

Jesus said the Holy Spirit will be in you and with you, speaking about His indwelling and His manifest presence.

Sensitivity to God’s Spirit is very important because it will keep you from making many mistakes, keep you from unknown danger and deliver divine blessings to you.

  1. Praying in the Spirit is praying according to God’s will.

‘Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.’ – 1 John 5:14.

One of the many benefits of this gift from God is that it helps you to pray according to His will. God does not answer all prayers, He only answers those that are in line with His will.

There are many Christians who pray and never received answers because their prayers were not the will of God for them or for whoever they were praying for. Praying in the Spirit is a perfect way to pray according to God’s will.

  1. It is the best way to give thanks.

‘Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.’ – 1 Corinthians 14:16-17

Praying in tongues is a great way of giving thanks to God. You need to give God thanks for all that He is to you and everything that He has done for you (See 1 Thessalonians 5:18).

The amazing thing is that you don’t know all that God does for you, you only know very little; so you cannot thank Him well by speaking in your natural human language.

When you pray in the supernatural language of heaven, then you give thanks to God well.

  1. Praying in tongues helps you pray out the plan of God for your life.

‘Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.’ – Psalm 127:1.

God has a divine purpose for everyone. His plan for your life can not be discovered naturally; it is not based on your natural gifts and talents. Your college degree or certificate cannot determine your divine purpose on earth.

You only know it as you begin to walk with God, but the knowledge of it is not enough. You must walk in it.

Praying in the Spirit helps you to pray God’s plan for you into tangible reality, helping you to birth all your God-given dreams.

  1. It furnishes a continual revival of your spirit.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.’ –  2 Corinthians 4:16.

Your spirit needs to be revived again and again. The reason for this is that everyone often gets discouraged for different reasons from time to time. The pressures and hassles of daily life do weaken the spirit but thank God for this precious gift.

The daily habit of speaking in tongues supplies strength and supernatural energy which enables you to overcome discouragements, disappointments, weighty concerns, and other emotional issues.

  1. It helps you to pray about the unknown.

‘Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercessions for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.’ – Romans 8:26.

Life is such a mystery that there are many things that are unknown to the natural mind. For instance, you do not know what will happen next week or next year; the hidden traps of the enemy, unforeseen dangers, and unpleasant surprises ahead.

Praying in the Spirit helps you deal with all these things, removing them from the way (See Ephesians 5:16).

When an individual, a family, a group, or a church take time to pray in the Spirit, troubles, accidents, storms, divorces, bankruptcy, etc. can be avoided. And yes, they will be replaced by blessings instead!

‘For with stammering lips and another tongue, He will speak to this people, to whom He said, “This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest,” and, “This is the refreshing” … – Isaiah 28:11-12.

Praying in tongues benefits not only your spirit but also your body. It takes away weariness, stress, and burdens, and makes you light and relaxed. It refreshes you totally and brightens you up.

You have no business with high blood pressure and similar health issues if you are given to this wonderful habit of speaking in tongues daily.

Use the gift God has given.

‘Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” – Acts 2:38,39.
