What Does the Bible Say about Praying Daily?

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful, and thankful. Colossians 4:2(NIV)

So, what does the Bible say about praying daily? Most of us agree that praying daily is essential, but do you pray daily? If yes, do you enjoy doing it, or is it something that you dread?

Well, if we are, to be honest, many of us find daily prayer to be challenging or confusing. Prayer is something we do when the need arises.

To make prayer a daily habit, we need to understand what the Bible says about praying.

Now, God doesn’t command us to pray daily in his word. But when you study scripture and the lives of people like Daniel, David, Paul, and Jesus, you’ll notice certain prayer patterns.

The first fact about prayer is these people prayed daily. Secondly, we are encouraged to pray continuously.

In this article, we are going to look at what the Bible says about prayer. And how to incorporate these truths about prayer in our daily lives.

Let’s dive right in and discover the Bible answer for the question, what Does the Bible Say about Praying Daily?

What the Bible says about Praying Daily

Pray without Ceasing

Praying without ceasing looks impossible, right? But it is not. God never asks us to do things we cannot do. Praying without ceasing enables us to create a habit of prayer. It helps us to be dependent on God.

Yes, it is good to pray in the morning and before bed. But how about doing it every second of the day (1Thessalonians 5:17). But how do we pray without ceasing? By maintaining a posture of prayer throughout the day.

See, prayer is not just about kneeling down or speaking the word out loud. You can pray without ceasing inwardly as you go about your daily activities.

Let your mind be stayed on the Lord by meditating on the word of God. And allowing God to speak to you through scripture.

Give us this day our Daily Bread

When Jesus taught his disciples how to pray, he included this: “give us this day our daily bread”.

It is easy to overlook or skim through this when we study the Lord’s Prayer. But we should not because this prayer carries a lot of weight. It teaches us something about praying daily

When we ask God for our daily bread, we are acknowledging our dependence on Him. It means that today’s prayer should not sustain you for a week or up to tomorrow.

We should not go before God once or twice a week. We should be like the children of Israel who gathered manna each day (Exodus 16:21). Let us go to God daily so that he can give us our daily bread.

Devote yourself to Prayer

The enemy is not really concerned about people who walk in darkness. He knows that they belong to his kingdom. But when you give your life to Christ and start walking in the purposes of God, you become his target. That is why the Bible encourages us to devote ourselves to prayer. (Colossians 4:2)

But what does it mean to devote ourselves? It means to give all or most of the time to something. So, in essence, committing ourselves to prayer means giving all or most of our time to prayer.

When we pray daily and continue steadfastly, we give God control over our lives and enable him to fight on our behalf. Remember that God has given us the gift of choice. Every single day is a chance for us to make a choice.

We can choose things that bring life or death.  When we continue in prayer, we give heaven the authority to fight our battles. We also allow God to guide us so that we can walk in the ways that are pleasing to Him.

Pray in Secret

When doing your daily prayers, it is important to pray in secret. Yes, there are times when we engage in corporate prayers.

Even Jesus prayed openly at times. But when it comes to our daily devotional, we should pray in our closets.

Let your daily prayer be an intimate time between you and God. God will reward you publicly for the times you spend in secret with him. This also goes to show that our daily prayer should be personal.

Just the way you talk with your friends privately about trivial matters is how you should do daily prayers. Let your prayer time be between you and your heavenly father.

Let your Prayers be According to God’s will

There are times when we pray but are not sure that God will answer our prayers. But the Bible tells us to be confident that our heavenly father will answer us when we pray. The best way for us to be confident is by ensuring that we ask things that are within God’s will.

Do not ask for things for selfish reasons. Remember, God will never go against his word. He is faithful to his word (James 4:3).

Find out what the word says about your need before going to him. Then pray according to his will, knowing that he will grant you the desires of your heart.

Note that God may not do it the exact way that you want. But remember, God’s ways are better, and his thoughts are higher than ours.

Without Faith, it is Impossible to Please God

There are so many teachings out there about prayer. Some people say that you need to pray out loud for you to receive what you are asking for. Others say you need to pray at certain hours. Then some say you need to perform certain acts for God to listen to you.

Now, some of these things are not bad. They were actually done by different people in the Bible. But they are not the reason why God answers our prayers.

God is not moved by your acts but by faith. When you say your daily prayer, believe that God has answered even before you see the answer (Mark 11:24).

Pray with confidence in your heart that God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond.

The Spirit Helps us in Our Weakness

Much as prayer is essential, there are those times when praying daily feels burdensome.

At times we don’t feel like doing our daily prayer because we don’t know what to say. Or how to express ourselves to God. But the good news is we don’t have to strive while praying. God has given us the Holy Spirit to help us in our weakness (Romans 8:26).

Don’t skip your daily prayer when you can’t find the right words. Instead, ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray.

He knows the desires of our hearts and also knows the mind of God. The Holy Spirit will help us to pray for things that are within God’s will.

We should Make Intercessions for other People

The issues of life can make us turn our prayer time into complaining sessions. But we need to understand that our prayer lives are not just about us and our problems.

When we go to God in prayer, we need to remember others in our prayers. We are ambassadors of God on earth. It is through us that God is able to accomplish his purposes on earth.

So as we do our daily prayer, let us remember to repent and make petitions for others. Let us pray for other believers and those that have not given their lives to Christ.

We should also not forget our leaders in government and church. Pray for peace and for the purposes of God to prevail in this world.

Praying Daily Helps us not to Enter into Temptation

As we have already discussed, we are in the battle. Our enemy does not play fair. He is out to kill, steal, and destroy. We need to be vigilant because he walks around like a roaring lion (1Peter 5:8).

One of the ways that we can watch out for him is by praying. Through prayer, God strengthens us so that we can stand against the wiles of the enemy.

When we pray, God reveals the enemy’s plans and shows us how to avoid or overcome them. We cannot win this battle in our own strength.

A prayer is a powerful tool that God has given to us so that we can be able to fight temptations. Whether you have been a Christian for many years or not, you need God to help you fight spiritual battles.

To sum it up:

There are no verses that deal with the topic of praying daily directly. But there are many verses that talk about praying that we can use as guidance.

Remember, God doesn’t ask us to pray in our free time only. We are expected to pray without ceasing. And the best way to do that is by making prayer a daily practice.

We cannot win against the enemy without God. We cannot bear fruit for the kingdom of God and walk in his ways without spending time in prayer. We need to pray so that we can accomplish his purposes on earth.

It is never too late to start praying daily. Let the Holy Spirit help you in your times of weakness. Be confident that God hears you when you pray. And he will answer you in His perfect timing. Never forget to pray for others when saying your daily prayer.
